Capitec warns about social-media and marketplace scams where fake profiles impersonate brands, celebrities or people the victim knows, then send spam messages or links to malicious websites, fake deals, jobs or investments.
Scammers create fake or cloned social profiles and ads to offer prizes, jobs, investments or marketplace deals, then ask for money, financial information or personal details.
Different pages, same playbook — matched by what they do, not just the brand.
Capitec’s ScamSlams warning says scammers impersonate trusted organisations such as retailers, banks, SARS or the High Court using SMS, email or WhatsApp messages with logos, legal documents, court notices or debt demands to create panic and push victims to click links, share details or make urgent payments.
Capitec’s tax-season warning says scammers impersonate SARS via fake emails and SMSs, saying the victim owes money or is due a refund and must click a link/open an attachment; the fake site asks for personal details or payment, and links may install malware.
